Family carers are experts in their own lives and their own experiences and can bring unique insights which are valuable for research. It is vital that the views and opinions of family carers are taken into account in all areas of research involving family carers, at a national and international level.
To ensure that carers’ unique insights are included in research projects from the earliest stages, Family Carers Ireland are in the process of setting up a ‘Family Carers Research Advisory Network’ – a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) network of family carers who will influence, advise and work with researchers advising on research projects or carrying out research that involve family carers.
In general, PPI in research means research carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. It is not about collecting data, but about offering advice, insights, and contributing to research projects in the same way other collaborators would.
