Statement on Review of SNA Allocations

Wednesday, 18th February 2026: Family Carers Ireland is aware of concerns regarding proposed changes to Special Needs Assistant (SNA) allocations in a number of mainstream primary schools. For families caring for children with additional needs, consistent school support is essential, as any reduction can place additional pressure on family carers/parents at home.

We welcome the announcement by the Department of Education that the review of SNA allocations has been paused following concerns raised by parents and schools. While SNA numbers have increased in 2025/2026 in line with new special classes opening, the demand for support within mainstream settings has also grown.

This pause provides an important opportunity to ensure assessment processes are clear, transparent, and centred on the needs of the child. We will continue to monitor developments, keep families informed, and advocate on behalf of those who may be impacted.
